It’s one of the most common questions our student advisors get asked.
"Can I just drop in for a quick trial class before I book?"
At many language schools in Barcelona, the answer is yes. But at Speakeasy BCN, our answer is a “No”. We do not offer trial classes.
We know this might sound strict at first. However, this policy is actually one of the biggest reasons our students learn Spanish so quickly and effectively.
In this post, we are going to pull back the curtain on our teaching philosophy. You'll learn:
Why trial classes actually hurt the learning process
How we fiercely protect our students' safe space
The risk-free alternative we offer instead of a trial class
Let’s get into it.
5 reasons why we don’t offer trial classes at Speakeasy BCN
1. Trial classes are disruptive
Imagine you’re finally getting the hang of speaking Spanish. You are practicing a difficult conversation with your classmates, and suddenly, a complete stranger walks in and sits in the back of the room to "watch."
It instantly changes the dynamic.
At Speakeasy BCN, we have a strict small class policy of just 8 to 13 students. This guarantees you get plenty of personalized attention from the teacher. But it also means that dropping a "trial student" into the mix can be disruptive to the people who have already paid to be there.
2. We protect your "Affective Filter"
In a previous post, we talked about Stephen Krashen’s 1982 research on language acquisition.
Krashen proved that students need a low-anxiety environment to actually acquire a new language. He calls this the "Affective Filter." If a student feels nervous or judged, their mental filter goes up and blocks new information.
To speak Spanish and make mistakes, you must feel completely comfortable and safe with your classmates.
A revolving door of trial students dropping in and out can affect that safe space. We refuse to disrupt our students' learning environment just to offer a free preview—while it may seem harsh to prospective new students, our current students appreciate it.
In fact, our “class sizes” are one of the most frequently cited phrases in our 1,300+ Google Reviews.
You can see a few of these reviews here.
3. You can't judge immersion in 45 minutes
Language acquisition is a marathon, not a sprint.
Judging a Spanish course by a 45-minute trial is like judging a movie after dropping into the movie theater halfway through. True immersion can feel a little overwhelming on the very first day, so it’s not a great representation of the whole.
It takes a few days for your brain to tune in, adapt, and start acquiring the language naturally.
A trial class only tests how you feel during that initial "shock" phase. It is not an accurate representation of how much you will learn once you settle into the rhythm of the course. This is especially true as a core part of our offering are weekly activities—another commonly cited aspect in our Google Reviews.
We really recommend you try out a full week of classes + immersive trips for a full picture.

4. You miss the vital context
High-quality language instruction relies on building new knowledge on top of what was taught the day before.
If a trial student drops into a Wednesday class, they have missed Monday and Tuesday's context. The lesson will naturally seem confusing or disjointed to them. This isn't because the teacher is bad. It's simply because the student lacks the foundation the rest of the group has already built.
We don't want you to feel lost. And we definitely don't want our teachers to have to slow down the progress of the rest of the class to catch a trial student up to speed.
But don’t you have flexible start dates?
Yes, we do have rolling admissions at Speakeasy BCN. We want to make it easy for students to change to a class that is a better fit if needed.
However, we still protect the group's foundation. As you can see with our popular Super-Intensive 30h/week course, new start dates are typically placed two weeks apart for this exact reason.
5. We only want committed teammates
When you join Speakeasy BCN, you are joining a team.
Educational psychology shows that groups of students who start together have much higher success rates. You bond, you support each other, and you hold each other accountable.
Trial classes create a transient, uncommitted atmosphere.
By requiring a commitment upfront, we ensure that every single person in your classroom is just as dedicated to learning Spanish as you are. There are no tourists in our classrooms—only teammates.
The Speakeasy Solution: Book a "Test Week"
So, how can you test out our classes without committing to a massive long-term program right away?
We encourage new students to simply book a course for one week.
A week gives you the perfect amount of time to experience our immersion methodology, meet the teachers, and overcome that initial first-day shock. You get to be a real part of the class, not just an observer.
The best part? If you love it (and we know you will) and decide to extend your course for a longer period, we will seamlessly roll that first week into your total package.
It's the ultimate win-win. You get a true, authentic experience of the school, and our classrooms remain focused, safe, and entirely disruption-free.
