BARCELONA TOURIST INFORMATION
Learn spanish in Barcelona - city of beaches and mountains

Click on the words in blue to open a new page with a link..

All big cities these days claim to "have everything" Most of these claims are far from the truth. Except perhaps Barcelona! This city does seem to, well, "have it all!"

Barcelona is a shining example of the Spanish and Catalan ability to mix a wonderful cocktail which combines the joy of life with the excitement of progress. Markets, trendy bars and shops, museums, adventure parks and of course the culinary treats. And beautiful beaches, both in and outside the city, gentle hills and high mountain peaks, culture dating from days of yore to the modern day, a riotous nightlife, world famous museums, a buzzing harbour area, enough shops to make Posh Spice break a sweat, a top football club, a Formula 1 racetrack. Pause for breath. And wide boulevards, luscious parks and awe inspiring architecture.

It would take to long to write about "everything," but here is an overview and then you can surf on to other sites to find more information. The words in bold letters on this page have links. If you click on them a new window on your pc will open with a site that has more information about the particular subject.

Lets begin with the architecture. Barcelona is the soul of Catalonia, which is expressed best through the magical buildings like the Sagrada Familia, designed by world famous architect Antoni Gaudi and others. All over the city you can find spectacular examples of the architecture from the modernist works of Gaudi to the latest works that were erected for the Olympic games of 1992.

There are museums and exhibitions with world famous artists such as Picasso, Miró and Dali. Then there is a buzzing and busy marina with everything from huge floating palatial yachts to fishing boats next to calm and clear beaches.
The centrepiece of the city's infrastructure is La Rambla - the walking street. Sometimes you feel as if you will meet everyone in the whole world if you wait long enough. While you are waiting you can be dazzled by the sights and sounds of the many colourful shops and stalls, street artists and cafés. But keep a close eye on your wallet and watch! If there was a Olympic games for pickpockets Barcelona would bring back all the medals!

The Gothic quarter, which is a result of the incredible economic activity in the city during its first economic boom during the middle ages, is now a romantic, picturesque myriad of streets and shops, where you can admire the wonderful gothic buildings - often accompanied by the musical backdrop of the many talented street musicians or the less musical beggars, who usually are paid to give up the flute for good rather than perform an encore.

A cable car will lift you swiftly up to the Miró museum on the Montjuic Mountain, where you can enjoy a stunning view of the city and the blue shimmering waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This is also the site of the Olympic Stadium built for the 1992 games.

Many also choose to soak in the special atmosphere of the famous football stadium, Nou Camp. It is impressive even when empty, but nothing can match the roar of cheers from of 80.000 fans when FC Barcelona's stars race on to the pitch for a big game.

Barcelona has a very well developed metro and bus system and it is easy to find your way around the city. There are many possibilities for day-trips or weekend breaks outside Barcelona. For example the famous Dali museum to the north, the mountain monastery of Monserrat, the Balearic Islands Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza or how about a trip to Andorra, which lies snugly in the peaks of the Pyrenees or a visit to a Cava vineyard.

And don't forget the shopping.
Did we forget to mention anything.. oh yes.. the nightlife.. plenty
of that, so don't forget your aspirins. Have fun!

The official website of the city is www.bcn.es
